Trong tự điển Anh Việt của Viện Ngôn Ngữ học (XB hơn 10 năm trước) thì có nghĩa thứ hai là "phép loại suy: quá trình suy luận dựa trên sự giống nhau một phần giữa hai sự vật so sánh" Thôi thì dùng tự điển Anh-Anh: Analogy: similarity, agreement, comparability - Logic: a form of reasoning in which one thing is inferred to be similar to another thing in a certain respect, on the basis of the known similarity between the things in other respects. - Logic, maths: a form of reasoning in which a similarity between two or more things is inferred from a known similarity between them in other respects Tự điển Wesbter thì như thế này: analogy: 1: inference that if two or more things agree with one another in some respects they will probably agree in others 2 a: resemblance in some particulars between things otherwise unlike : SIMILARITY b: comparison based on such resemblance 3: correspondence between the members of pairs or sets of linguistic forms that serves as a basis for the creation of another form Word Origin & History analogy 1540s, from L. analogia, from Gk. analogia "proportion," from ana- "upon, according to" + logos "ratio," also "word, speech, reckoning." A mathematical term used in a wider sense by Plato. ratio, in accordance with, correspondence Từ analogy có nguồn gốc từ tiếng Hy lạp có nghĩa là tương ứng; tỉ lệ; phù hợp với. An analogy is made from sets of words or concepts (or pictures/figures) that have a particular

relationship. Analogy problems often show pairs of words. The relationship between the first pair is the same as the relationship between the second pair. Mình thêm vào chứ pictures/figures nữa, vì các Bạn cũng thấy có analogies cho hình ảnh mà. Từ mối liên hệ của cặp thứ nhất, để suy ra mối liên hệ tương tự cho cặp thứ hai. HOW CAN STUDENTS USE ANALOGIES? Analogies stimulate critical and creative thinking and can be used in all content and skill areas. They can teach and reinforce content, as well as assess students’ abilities to identify relationships and make connections. Causal Analogies:A causal analogy shows a relationship between two pairs of words. In one kind of causal analogy, one word shows a cause and the other shows the effect of that cause. In the second kind of causal analogy, the second word in each each pair shows the result of a change made to the first word. Such a change may be, for example, a mathematical operation, or a change in a word’s tense or part of speech. 2. Serial Analogies:A serial analogy shows a relationship between two pairs of words. In each pair, one word relates to the other in time, size, sequence, quantitiy or intensity. 3. Categorical Analogies: A categorical analogy shows a relationship between two pairs of words. In each pair, one word names a category and the other names an example from that category. 4. Descriptive Analogies: A descriptive analogy shows a relationship between two pairs of words. In each pair, one word describes a characteristic, property, part, function, structure, use, position, or location of the other. 5. Comparative Analogies: A comparative analogy shows a relationship between two pairs of words. The words in each pair are synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, or anagrams (two words that contain the same letters arranged in different ways, like silo and oils) Người ta chia làm 5 loại như trên: nhân-quả, chuỗi, phân loại, miêu tả, so sảnh (khó dịch thiệt!) Bà con nào giỏi ngôn ngữ Việt thì dịch ra đi WHY? - BENEFITS Familiarity with analogies and critical thinking techniques can help to increase student achievement on standardized tests. Studying and understanding analogies also helps develop thinking skills, an essential concept for all students. .... Most analogies, of course, are more challenging than these simple examples. To come up with the right answer, you will have to search for clues. This means looking for characteristics and associations that link the words. That’s why analogies are such popular testing tools: they require careful, logical reasoning. ...

Analogies are used on many standardized tests, and many educators feel that analogies are the best indicators of “intelligence” and “aptitude.” Analogies require students to think abstractly and analytically as opposed to working out problems in a rote fashion. ... Analogy plays a significant role in problem solving, decision making, perception, memory, creativity, emotion, explanation and communication. ... Analogous thinking is already a part of many classrooms. The processes invovle in solving analogies in the content areas empower students. Thinking analogicaly requires learners to: - actively process information - make important connections - use information and skills to identify relationships - construct relationships and generate new knowledge - improve understanding and long-term memory Các Bạn thấy có nhiều lý do tại sao mà người ta nhấn mạnh đến Analogies như vậy, vì đó là cái được "học" nhiều nhất trong suốt chương trình học phổ thông của Mỹ. Người ta không nói nhiều hay chỉ rõ ra, nhưng hầu như nơi đâu cũng có.
