Part 1. Complete the text using the words and phrases in the box.
In Asian cultures, many people still live with their (19) , which usually consists of three or
more generations. Members of such families often have disagreements or even come into conflict due to
generational differences. Older generations may have traditional views about gender roles and may want
younger (20) to agree with them. For example, many Asian parents still force their children to follow in
their (21) when choosing careers and other activities. They fail to realize that they may not share
many common characteristics. The experiences parents have had growing up don’t always apply to their
children’s life. Therefore, it is very important for people of different generations to be
(22) new ideas. Understanding each other’s views and values will help to bridge the generation gap.
Part 2. Read the text and choose the best answer A, B or C to each of the questions.
Roof gardens, or gardens built on the top of city buildings, have become very popular in recent years.
particularly in developed cities. It is even predicted that they will be the future of city architecture. This is
because the lack of space and overpriced land in cities makes it difficult to increase the number of parks
and other green areas. So, what makes these 'green roofs' so attractive to city dwellers?
Roof gardens can improve air quality in cities. Plants take in and keep heat and light, and help to cool the
environment around them. This way, green roofs help reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to heating
and cooling buildings. They also help decrease dust pollution and the formation of smog, a mixture of
smoke and fog, which is common in big cities.
Moreover, green roofs can provide new habitats for widows. They can help reduce the impact of urban
development on habitat loss. For example, the City Hal in Chicago, the USA, has become home to more
than 20.000 plants of over 150 different kinds. The living roof of Vancouver Convention Centre in
Canada hosts 400.000 plants and 60,000 bees. Roof gardens also attract birds and insects, which increases
the biodiversity in the area. In summary, roof gardens can reduce pollution and improve human
interaction with nature by introducing green space into the built environment. Connecting with nature is
beneficial to our physical and mental health, and can increase quality of life.
23. What is the text mainly about?
A. The future of smart gardens.

Script 1:
Good morning, everyone. As we know, over the last century, life expectancy has increased. Many of the
richest countries in the world have a life expectancy of over 80 years. For example, in 2022, the life
expectancy in Switzerland, Singapore and Italy was over 84 years, while in Hong Kong and Japan it was
above 85 years. The current life expectancy worldwide is over 72 years and it's expected to go up. So why
is it increasing? Well, there are many reasons for this. I'll talk about three of them. First, people
nowadays can get access to better medical care that helps them stay healthy and live longer. Second,
more people understand the importance of good health. So they break bad habits such as smoking and
drinking and start practicing healthier lifestyle habits. In addition, people eat a more balanced diet and
healthier foods. They are also more careful in choosing foods and drinks that are lower in sugar, salt and
fat. And finally, people nowadays have a better understanding of age-related diseases and how to treat
them. This helps them look after themselves better and prepare for any possible agerelated diseases.
So now let's move on to …
Script 2:
Ms Smith: Good morning. Welcome to our exhibition: Future Cities. Here you can see models of our
cities of the future. Please take a look around and feel free to ask me any questions.
Nam: This model looks very interesting. Can you tell me more about it, Ms Smith?
Ms Smith: Yes. This is a ‘green city’ designed to reduce its negative impact on the environment. As you
can see, more than fifty per cent of it is made up of green areas.
Nam: I don’t see any private vehicles on the roads.
Ms Smith: Most people will use public transport such as trams and electric buses. There will be fewer
traffic jams and less pollution.
Nam: So city dwellers will stop using their cars in urban areas.
Ms Smifh: That's the idea.
Nam: I like it. It seems a good solution to many environmental problems. (...)
Mai: Let’s look at the city over there. I can see robots and lots of cameras in the streets. What's special

about this city?
Ms Smith: It's called a ‘smart city’. Al technologies, such as cameras and smart sensors, will be
installed to help the city operate more efficiently.
Mai: The modern infrastructure of the city looks beautiful. I’m really impressed with the high-rise
buildings.
Ms Smith: Tall buildings can actually limit the carbon footprint of the built environment and help solve
housing problems in big cities.
Mai: Mmm, I'm thinking of living in a smart city in the future.

A healthy diet is rich in fiber, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, "good" or unsaturated fats, and
omega-3 fatty acids. These dietary components turn down inflammation, which can damage tissue, joints,
artery walls, and organs. Going easy on processed foods is another element of healthy eating. Sweets,
foods made with highly refined grains, and sugar-sweetened beverages can cause spikes in blood sugar
that can lead to early hunger. High blood sugar is linked to the development of diabetes, obesity, heart
disease, and even dementia.
The Mediterranean diet meets all of the criteria for good health, and there is convincing evidence that it is
effective at warding off heart attack, stroke, and premature death. The diet is rich in olive oil, fruits,
vegetables, nuts and fish; low in red meats or processed meats; and includes a moderate amount of cheese
and wine.
Physical activity is also necessary for good health. It can greatly reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke,
type 2 diabetes, breast and colon cancer, depression, and falls. Physical activity improves sleep and
endurance. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise every week, such as brisk walking.
Strength
training, important for balance, bone health, controlling blood sugar, and mobility, is recommended 2-3
times per week.
Finding ways to reduce stress is another strategy that can help you stay healthy, given the connection
between stress and a variety of disorders. There are many ways to relieve stress. Try meditation,
mindfulness, yoga, playing on weekends, and taking vacations.
Finally, establish a good relationship with a primary care physician. If something happens to your health,
a physician you know —and who knows you — is in the best position to help. He or she will also
recommend tests to check for hidden cancer or other conditions.
